Music and the Evening Canticles in the Anglican Church
June 28, 2025 @ 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
An Afternoon with Richard Pantcheff, the Director of Music at St Michael at the North Gate Church.
“The Evening Canticles (being the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis), have for many centuries been central to the service of Evensong, and the most-loved of all the canticles of the Anglican Church, resulting in many fine musical settings. We will aim to explore the reasons for this popularity, what the origins of the canticles were, and why they have proved to be so attractive to composers and choirs as vehicles for musical expression and worship“.

Richard Pantcheff is internationally renowned as
one of the finest contemporary British composers
of choral, organ, chamber and instrumental music.
He studied music at Christ Church, Oxford, under Simon Preston & Francis Grier, and corresponded
at length with Benjamin Britten in the last years of Britten’s life. His substantial output of compositions
has been commissioned, performed, recorded, and broadcast all over the world.
